AXONE O 50MG contains Cefpodoxime which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria such as otitis media (inflammation of middle ear leading to pain and fever), tonsilitis (sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes), chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the airways present in the lungs leading to cough with mucus), community acquired pneumonia (inflammation of lungs leading to congestion), gonorrhoea (sexually transmitted infection in rectum, cervix or vagina), skin structure infections (rashes, swelling, redness, pain, pus, and itching), maxillary sinusitis (inflammation around the nasal cavity leading to headache and runny nose) and cystitis (strong, persistent urge to urinate with burning sensation and blood in the urine).

AXONE O 50MG should be avoided if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics (such as cefuroxime, cefixime) or if you had experienced immediate or severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as ampicillin). Before taking AXONE O 50MG, inform your doctor if you have or ever had colitis, liver problems and impaired kidney function. Your doctor may monitor your blood count and liver enzymes through blood tests while taking AXONE O 50MG.

AXONE O 50MG should be used with caution in pregnant women unless clearly advised by the doctor and it is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. AXONE O 50MG is not recommended for use in infants (less than 2 months of age) and it should be used with caution in elderly patients. The most common side effects of taking AXONE O 50MG are diarrhoea, nausea, itching and irritation in the vagina and vulva, abdominal pain and headache Consult your doctor if any of the symptom worsens.

USES OF AXONE O 50MG

It is used in adults and adolescents to treat the following bacterial infections:


Acute otitis media
Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
Community-acquired pneumonia
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
Uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhoea
Rectal gonococcal infections in women
Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections
Acute maxillary sinusitis
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis)


HOW AXONE O 50MG WORKS

AXONE O 50MG prevents infection by stopping or preventing the bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting their cell wall formation, which is essential for the bacteria to survive as it provides protection from the environment. This kind of action that kills bacteria is useful in treating various bacterial infections.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take AXONE O 50MG as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of infection.

SIDE EFFECTS OF AXONE O 50MG

COMMON


Diarrhoea
Nausea
Fungal infection in vagina and vulva (itching and excess discharge)
Abdominal pain
Headache


UNCOMMON


Fungal, bacterial, and parasitic infections
Abdominal distention, malaise, fatigue, weakness, fever, chest pain, back pain, chills, and generalized pain
Abscess, allergic reaction, and facial edema
Localized edema, and pain
Congestive heart failure, palpitations, changes in blood pressure
Hematoma (collection of blood outside of blood vessels)
Migraine
Vomiting, gastritis, dry mouth, flatulence, decreased appetite, constipation
Ulcers in mouth, tongue disorders, tooth disorders, increased thirst, and toothache
Anemia, dehydration, and weight gain
Dizziness, insomnia, somnolence, anxiety, shakiness, nervousness, impaired concentration, confusion, nightmares
Vertigo (head spinning sensation)
Cough, wheezing, breathing difficulty
Skin rash with itching, hair loss, and sunburn
Taste alterations, eye irritation, taste loss, and ear pain
Urinary tract infections


RARE


Altered liver function tests
Change in blood cell counts (white blood cells and platelet count)


Stop taking AXONE O 50MG and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:


Severe diarrhoea due to pseudomembranous colitis
Signs of allergic reaction (skin rash, joint pain, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat, or tongue)
Signs of stevens-johnson syndrome (blistering or bleeding of the skin around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, genitals, and fever)
Signs of toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe blistering rash where peeling of skin layer exposes the skin along with feeling of being unwell, fever, chills, and muscle pain)
Signs of erythema multiforme (skin rash or skin lesions with a pink/red ring and a pale centre which may be itchy, scaly, or filled with fluid, especially on the palms or soles of your feet)
Signs of severe anemia type (infections occur more easily than usual, yellowing of the skin, eyes or mouth and feeling tired)
Seizures mainly in patients with impaired kidney function


HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Take this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals and avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. In case of no improvement in the symptom, consult your doctor.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluids such as water and fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own to treat without consulting your doctor.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller and frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. In case of no improvement in the symptom, consult your doctor.

Decreased appetite:

Eat when you feel hungry. Eat smaller meals frequently than usual. Snack only when you're hungry. Eat a nutritious snack which is rich in calories and protein, such as dried fruit and nuts. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

AXONE O 50MG is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking AXONE O 50MG.

BREASTFEEDING

AXONE O 50MG is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking AXONE O 50MG.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel dizzy and confused after taking AXONE O 50MG.

KIDNEY

AXONE O 50MG should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney function. Consult your doctor before taking AXONE O 50MG.

LIVER

AXONE O 50MG should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking AXONE O 50MG.

ALLERGY

Do not take AXONE O 50MG if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics (such as cefuroxime, cefixime) or if you had experienced immediate or severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillin or other betalactam antibiotics (such as ampicillin).

OTHERS

Before taking AXONE O 50MG inform your doctor if you:


Have history of gastrointestinal disease (particularly colitis)


Use in Paediatrics:

AXONE O 50MG is not recommended for use in infants (less than 2 months of age). Consult child’s doctor for advice to effectively treat the infection.

Use in Geriatrics:

AXONE O 50MG should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before taking AXONE O 50MG.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before taking AXONE O 50MG, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:


Medicines used to treat indigestion (Ex. aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, omeprazole)
Medicines for treating gastric ulcers (Ex. ranitidine, cimetidine)
Medicines used to treat high blood pressure or fluid retention (Ex. spironolactone, bumetanide, torsemide)
Other medicines used to treat bacterial infections (Ex. gentamicin, streptomycin)
Probenecid (used to prevent and treat gouty arthritis)
Warfarin (used to prevent and treat blood clots)
Medicines used to prevent pregnancy (Ex. ethinyl estradiol, desogestrel)


Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of AXONE O 50MG, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal discomfort.
